As good global citizens, You Go Girls! serves not only those of you who travel with us but also women of the wider world. Each year, we choose to help support a program from someplace in the world which serves women and or children.
HOPE Charities is our special choice for 2009. A portion of our profits will aid their vocational training program for the poorest of the poor in Kurumbanadom, India. This program is near and dear to our hearts as in November of 2008 a group of Go Girls will visit it and spent time side by side with the remarkable women enrolled in their Vatsala Shenoy Women's Vocational Center.
These women are the poorest of the poor. They are born into extreme poverty and have very limited prospects for escaping it. The economy of their area is based on rubber and coffee plantations. It may sound exotic to us but for them it is a dead end.
A full time Vocational Training Teacher teaches sewing and crafts to a class of 15 women in a year long training. Small scale community sewing project allow graduates to put their newly acquired skills to work and earn income for the first time in their lives.
