Yes, Iceland is a HOT destination. For many years, Europeans have known its treasures, but Americans are now discovering them too.
You will find it a fascinating natural wonderland. It is blessed with erupting geysers, comfortable hot springs, dramatic lava formations, whale-filled oceans, eye popping waterfalls, and glaciers covering a large portion of the landmass. And it is possible to stand with your feet on opposite tectonic plates and see signs of their movement.
But the hand of man has also added significantly to the experiences of a visit. There is the art of Einar Jonsson that will probably be new to you. You know the Blue Lagoon, but do you know the Secret Lagoon? Visits to the beautiful Harpa Theater and the Hellisheidi Power Plant will add a depth to your knowledge of this interesting country, where almost 100% of their energy is renewable.
Many of their foodstuffs must be imported but you must try the local Volcano Bread, a sweet rye cooked in the ground. There are wonderful pastry shops and the fish is fresh off the boat.
You will not expect to see snow on the ground in May with temperatures in the mid 50s. Layering clothes are the way to dress in the very casual city of Reykjavik. Hats and gloves are de rigueur.
So here is your invitation to join me on my return to Iceland. I would love to share it with you and I need to go back for one of those great handknitted sweaters!
